Introduction: The book of Revelation is actually a letter sent by the Lord Jesus, through the Apostle John, to seven local churches: to the church in Ephesus, the church in Smyrna, the church in Pergamos, the church in Thyatira, the church in Sardis, the church in Philadelphia, and the church in Laodicea. These seven local churches were literal churches as well as figurative, representing the development of the church throughout history. Within this letter, in chapters 2 and 3, Christ addresses the condition of each local church individually, followed by His specific requirements for each. He concludes each of the seven epistles with the general injunction, He who has an ear, let Him hear what the Spirit says to the churches, indicating that each of His requirements of a particular local church are also His requirements for all the local churches. In chapter 7 of The Seven Spirits for the Local Churches (Anaheim: Living Stream Ministry, 1989) Witness Lee, a gifted Bible scholar and Christian teacher, focuses on the main points of each of these requirements and applies them to the present situation of the local churches. |
